Sàn Art is pleased to present our latest summer pop-up: ‘Saigon City Slang’, a gallery takeover by Saigonese and Saigon-based emerging talents Vy Trinh, Vutru inc., Teo Pham, Rab, Pham The Vinh, Ném Space and Vinatapes. Transforming our space into a more laid-back atmosphere, the showcase introduces practices nurtured by the city’s distinctive cosmopolitan and bustling environment as seen through the eyes of practitioners born or raised in the 1990s and 2000s. Shifting away from the remnants of memory and war, they create and respond to a world of clashing aesthetics, urbanity, commodification culture, digital connectivity and globalisation.

Saigon fuses frenetic modern energy with vestiges of its colonial history, typical townhouses of all shapes and colours juxtaposed with modern high-rises, all this adorned with occasional flashes of “bling-bling” that reflect the country’s emergence as a dynamic force in the Asian economy. One enduring characteristic of this dissonant profile has been its ability to maintain a cosmopolitan flair, shaped by a long history of migrations. In this context of modular belonging where identity and community are increasingly shaped through online connection, hybrid creative platforms, or local subcultures, new art practices worthy of notice are beginning to emerge.
