Biography

Gerardo Mosquera is an independent curator, critic, art historian, and writer. He was one of the organizers of the initial, highly influential Havana Biennials (1984, 1986 and 1989) and was an adjunct curator at the New Museum of Contemporary Art in New York (1995-2009). Gerardo’s extensive curatorial work includes being Artistic Director of PHotoEspaña, Madrid (2011–2013), Chief Curator of the 4th Poly/Graphic San Juan Triennial (2015-2016), co-curator of the 3rd Documents, Beijing (2016), and co-curator of Adiós Utopia: Dreams and Deceptions in Cuban Art Since 1950 (2017) at The Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, and the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis. He is currently Chief Curator of the Paiz Art Biennial, Guatemala. Widely published as a critic and writer, he has been an advisor at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kusten in Amsterdam since 1995. Consultancy work includes The House of Africa, Havana (1989), International Association of Art Critics, Paris (1994-1995), Art in General, New York (2010), MUAC, Mexico City (2011), and the Prince Claus Awards Selection Committee (1998-2003).
