Biography

Dinh Q. Lê (b. 1968, Ha Tien, Vietnam) studied Studio Art at UC Santa Barbara, followed by Photography and Related Media at The School of Visual Arts in New York City before returning to Vietnam in the 1990’s. His artistic practice consistently challenges how our memories are recalled with context in contemporary life and affirm a commitment to the artistic process as a means of excavating history. Besides being an artist, Lê also co-founded Vietnam Art Foundation (VNFA) based in Los Angeles, an organization that supports Vietnamese artists and promotes artistic exchange between cultural workers from Vietnam and around the world. He is also one of the co-founders of Sàn Art.

Lê’s work has been exhibited worldwide. His solo exhibitions include “Memory for Tomorrow” at the Mori Art Museum, Tokyo and Hiroshima City Art Museum (2015), ; “Project 93: Dinh Q. Lê” at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), New York (2010-2011) ; “A Tapestry of Memories: The Art of Dinh Q. Lê” at the Bellevue Art Museum, Washington State, USA (2007), ; and “Destination for the New Millennium, The Art of Dinh Q. Lê” at the Asia Society, New York (2005). He has also participated in major art fairs and events such as “Delays and Revolutions”, Venice Biennale (2003) ; 5th Asia Pacific Triennial at Gallery of Modern Art in Brisbane, Australia (2006) ; documenta 13, Kassel, Germany (2012) ; Carnegie International, Pittsburgh, USA (2013) ; and more recently Quebéc Biennale (2019) and Setouchi Triennale (2019).
