Sàn Art is delighted to invite you to come to a marathon screening and workshop/talk with filmmaker Trương Minh Quý. The first part of the event presents 10 films made and selected by the filmmaker. The second part of the event follows with a workshop/talk/discussion led by Trương Minh Quý on film and forgetting, the impossibility of completion, and the ghostliness of film, a “hopeless hope to make something out of something else, to make something have some meaning, to save that something from falling into the banal-ness, even though it is the banality itself.”
**This event is by registration only. A suggested donation of VND150,000/person is much appreciated in order to support the artist. The films are in Vietnamese with English subtitles, with the exception of The Sublime of Rectum. The talk will be conducted in Vietnamese with no translation.**
— Film to Forget —
Light and darkness, positive and negative, remembering and forgetting… Film, perhaps, exists only in the moments between the transitions, changes and deaths.
Film, a continuous train of images, as if a metamorphosis of a life with different lives, similar yet distinguished. Film will die and resurrect because eventually there is no death.
Film, hopeless hope to make something out of something else, to make something have some meaning, to save that something from falling into the banal-ness, even though it is the banality itself.
Film, a fear out of the epiphany that there is nobody else but ourselves to work it out, to touch the dead-line of the film, which has evolved to be the selves of us filmmakers, those selves that are occupied by the fear of being unable to complete themselves.
Completion, however, is impossible. Nothing can be completed. A film simply finds a stop to end, a pause to forget.
Film, a ghost that follows throughout the life of filmmakers. Every new thing we make is just a continuation of what is uncompleted in the past. Film, a ghost who can’t be completed even until its death (but death doesn’t exist either).
